Finally, it’s winter. The year’s first real blast of winter hit Chicago, dumping more than 17 inches at O’Hare since Wednesday morning and closing scores of schools. Chicago Public Schools, however, remain open. [Chicago Sun-Times]

Consolidation – Linux PS2 Kits [Blue’s News]

IBM Stretch (aka IBM 7030

eric/retrocomputing/ibm/stretch/”>IBM Stretch (aka IBM 7030 Data Processing System)In 1954 IBM initiated a project “Datatron”, with the intent of taking a “giant step” to secure their position as the preeminent vendor of high-performance computers. Later renamed Stretch, the project’s primary objective was to produce a computer with 100 times the speed of the IBM 704 scientific computer. This goal was perhaps even more aggressive than it sounds, given that the performance of the logic circuits increased by only a factor of ten to twenty, and memory performance by only a factor of six. Architectural improvements such as extensive use of parallelism were required to meet (or even approach) the goal.

I did some research into IBM in the 60’s, for the upcoming Honeyslide sketch show. I found a few interesting links:

IBM Archives
Eric Smiths Retro Computing
NASA Technical Diagrams and Drawings

I know the last one isn’t really about IBM…the beauty of the internet is in the tangents.
