Annoyances.org – Setting up Internet Connection Sharing (Windows 98)
I’m planning on setting this up in the next few weeks. I know it’s kind of old school, but I need it for a little networking problem in Camri’s office.
She has a Win98 machine that’s connected to our wireless subnet. She also has a “wired” ethernet card in the machine, that she hasn’t used since I set up wireless.
She just won a lottery at work, so she’s taking home an old Mac G3. I want to get it on our network, but I don’t want to invest in another wireless card, or run ethernet cable across the apartment. So, I’m going to put a hub in her office, and wire the two computers. Then, have the Win98 machine route from the two computer wired network to the apartment wireless subnet.
Which means I’ll now have three subnets in the house. My nerd quotient just skyrocketed. I’m in the 98% of nerds in the Chicago land area. Hurray for me!

OpenP2P.com: Internet Radio the P2P Way [Sep. 24, 2002]
I’d love to be able to use this sort of stuff from work, but the firewall here prevents it. I’m going to try it out at home though, it sounds like some cool stuff. They use the Gnutella network as a backbone for radio streaming. Kind of a neat idea.

Atomic Photo Album
Looks nice and simple. I’m not sure if it requires any libraries or not. I’m going to test it out.

O’Reilly Network: Serve Your iCal Calendars Using WebDAV [Sep. 20, 2002]
iCal is mega-dope. It’s Apple’s implementation of the open vCalendar /iCalendar protocal. Despite the funky addresses on the apple site, you can use any iCalendar enabled calendar app (including Microsoft Outlook). For instance, the Steeler’s schedule is at webcal://ical.mac.com/ical/Steelers.ics If you replace “webcal” with http, you can import the schedule into Outlook.

Excellent.

Chicago cops testing high-tech scooter
The city has leased six of the scooters, which feature self-balancing technology that stemmed from research on wheelchairs. They are getting three-month trial runs at the Police Department, O’Hare and Midway airports and other city departments at a cost of $9,600.
Between this and the Taxi story, Chicago sure is getting some dope new rides.

Yellow Cab seeks to bring Chicago London-style taxis
The screen would be imbedded into the safety shield that separates driver from passenger. It would allow Chicago cab riders to access information about hotels, restaurants, theaters and museums, while also keeping track of the stock market and the latest news. It might even allow passengers to make hotel and restaurant reservations.
Pretty cool. Currently, if I have to schedule a cab, I call Checker. Mainly because I can remember the number (312-CHECKER) easily. If Yellow Cab really changes their fleet to these new jobs, I’d make the switch, as long as the cost was the same.

My new avatar for the Improv Chicago message board. I thought it was kind of a funny picture. Camri took it of me while deep in thought. That’s why I look like a monkey. Enjoy.

I bought the above book. So far, so good. Although I can’t imagine ever needing Java in my current Sysadmin role, I can’t help but want to understand Java.
Will anything come of this? I hope so. I have some ideas for management consoles for the IO site, as well as some management stuff for this site. I’d also like to get more intimate with the brains of mcavoyrobot, written entirely in Java.
I’ve been debating which of the “big” languages (Java or C) to learn for a while, and finally decided on Java because there’s things I can do with it immediately. I know that C is ultimately more useful for a Computer Science-y path, but there’s no use in learning it if you’re not going to use it.
So, Java it is.

A few things I’d like to do with this site:
- Integrate mcavoyrobot, publish chat logs.
- Have RSS feeds on sidebar
- Change the top graphic, so that it rotates on each hit.
- Some kind of gallery section for photos
AND
That’s all for now.
